Cobra Kai Season 3 Is Coming Sooner Than You Might Think

By | September 1, 2020
  • Cobra Kai is the 34-years-later sequel to the iconic Karate Kid movies of the ’80s.
  • The show follows original characters Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) and Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka)
  • While Seasons 1 and 2 debuted on YouTube Premium, they’ve now moved to Netflix, where Season 3 will eventually premiere.

Fans of The Karate Kid have been thrilled to see Cobra Kai, the series set 34 years after the original 1984 film, hit Netflix. The first two seasons of the show, which previously lived on YouTube Premium, reached a significantly larger audience for the first time when they were put on the streaming giant.

Cobra Kai had received universally great reviews upon release—the first season has a 100% score, and the second has an 88%—and now fans of the original film series who didn’t subscribe to YouTube Red are finally getting the opportunity to catch on.

It might be a bit surprising that a 34-years-later sequel series is so good, but a few factors working in its favor help to make that all check out. It starts with stars Ralph Macchio and William Zabka returning—there’s no faking that. Plus, the people behind the show know what they’re doing; Cobra Kai was co-created by Josh Heald (who wrote Hot Tub Time Machine) and the combination of Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg, who together were behind the Harold and Kumar films and 2012’s American Wedding. There’s a good resume of funny here, which explains the show’s self-aware sense of humor.

So as fans are enjoying the comedy, the drama, the fighting, and everything else about Cobra Kai, we got to the bottom of everything there is to know about the forthcoming second season. It’s not exactly around the corner, but it’s still probably going to sneak up on you.

When Is Cobra Kai Season 3 coming out?

The third season of Cobra Kai is due out in 2021. Netflix hasn’t announced an exact date yet, but in the initial announcement where the streaming giant revealed that it had acquired the series from its previous home on YouTube Red, it was also announced that Season 3 had completed filming, and the season would be out next year.

Back in December, Hurwitz quote tweeted Schlossberg sharing a photo from a Season 3 scene being shot in Okinawa, Japan. He revealed that filming for the new season was complete. “Now @CobraKaiSeries Season 3 is officially WRAPPED!” he wrote. ‘

Will the cast return for Season 3?

Yup. The principle cast will all be back for the third season of Cobra Kai, including, of course, Ralph Macchio and William Zabka. Both leads shared on social media last winter when they wrapped production.

Perhaps the biggest question mark for Season 3 is whether or not Xolo Mariduena, who plays Miguel Diaz, would return after the Season 2 cliffhanger. But producers have confirmed his return, and he tweeted about wrapping production on Season 3. So rest assured, in some capacity, Miguel will be back.

Season 3 will mark Daniel LaRusso’s first real trip to Okinawa.

The Karate Kid Part II has a plot that takes place in Okinawa, Japan, but the movie was actually filmed in Hawaii. So, as Hurwitz noted in a December tweet, Season 3 marks the first time Ralph Macchio as Daniel LaRusso has ever actually visited Okinawa for real.

At last year’s San Diego Comic Con, Heald discussed how both dojos, Cobra Kai and Miyagi-Do, will dig further into their backgrounds and where they came from. That led into Daniel’s Season 3 trip to Okinawa. “We find that Cobra Kai and Miyagi-Do … dig a little bit into those origins,” Heald said. “In that journey, we will see Daniel LaRusso return to Okinawa.”

It will feature the return of another classic Karate Kid character.

Chozen Toguchi, played by Yuji Okumoto, was the villain when Daniel went to Okinawa in 1986’s The Karate Kid Part II. In the footage Netflix released of Season 3, fans spotted the return of that familiar face.

Daniel’s first love interest, Ali, could very well return.

Ali, played by ’80s icon Elizabeth Shue, is one of the most memorable characters of the films, and Heald was asked if she would return at a panel. “I respectfully decline to answer the question,” he said. That’s definitively not a “no!”

Get ready for a huge ending.

Back in January, Hurwitz did a bit of playful tooting of his own horn—namely, pointing out how absolutely badass the Cobra Kai Season 3 ending is.

“I cannot wait for you to see the Cobra Kai Season 3 finale,” he wrote. “But I especially can’t wait for you to see the last 90 seconds. People are gonna go nuts. I know I do every time.”
